I Don't Trust Coatings Suppliers That Say 'Yes'—Here's How Axalta Earned Our Business

Since 2020, I've been the person who orders industrial coatings for a 120-person metal fabrication shop. Roughly $400,000 a year across nine vendors. I report to both operations and finance—which means I get blamed when a coating fails and ignored when the supply chain runs smoothly.

Here's my unpopular opinion: a coatings supplier that says "yes" to every question isn't helpful—it's a liability. The vendors I've kept on contract are the ones who've told me "this product isn't right for that job" before I wasted money finding out. That's the real reason Axalta still handles our account.

I didn't start with that attitude. Three years and two failed coating projects ago, I would have signed with anyone who quoted the lowest per-gallon price. I've changed because I've paid for my own mistakes.

Epoxy coatings for concrete: the "one-size-fits-all" trap

First mistake was a classic. We needed to coat a 10,000-square-foot warehouse floor with epoxy coatings for concrete. The supplier I called said "no problem" without asking a single question about the slab.

We prepped the surface, applied the primer, rolled out the epoxy. Six weeks later, it was delaminating in patches. The concrete had a moisture vapor emission rate above the product's spec—nobody had tested it. Nobody asked if we should.

I said "floor coating." They heard "any concrete surface under any conditions." We were using the same words but meaning different things. We discovered this when the rep showed up, looked at the peeling floor, and asked, "you did run a moisture test first, right?"

Not every concrete floor is a good candidate for epoxy. If your slab has high moisture, high hydrostatic pressure, or unaddressed cracks, you need a different system—or at least a moisture barrier before you spend money on coating. A rep who tells you epoxy works on every concrete floor hasn't seen enough real-world failures.

That's where my opinion started shifting. When I called Axalta to quote another concrete flooring job, their rep asked about the slab first: moisture tests, surface profile, age of the concrete. Then said, "if your moisture levels are high, don't buy epoxy until we sort that out." They walked away from an easy sale that day. And earned a long-term customer.

Can you laser engrave powder coating? Yes—but you need the right help

The second question we kept hitting was about marking. We laser-engrave logos and serial numbers onto powder-coated parts, and after one inconsistent batch, I went searching for answers. The internet gives you a frustrating mix of "yes, definitely" and "no, it doesn't work" with very little in between.

Can you laser engrave powder coating? Short answer: yes. Long answer: it depends on the powder's resin chemistry, pigment type, and the laser's settings. CO₂ and fiber lasers can both mark powder-coated surfaces, but you have to test parameters for each formulation.

Turns out our Axalta Coating Systems rep in Glen Mills PA could have saved us that research. Their powder coating team sent over application notes and walked our finishing supervisor through the right test sequence. What took us a week of trial and error would have taken one phone call.

That kind of support is easy to underestimate until you need it. The better question is whether your supplier knows how their own product behaves under a laser beam. (We finally bought our own engraver in late 2024—we've marked thousands of parts since.)

Now—does that mean powder coating is right for every product we make? No. For thin-films on heat-sensitive components, we still spec liquid. For field repairs where you can't bake the part, powder isn't the answer. The honest answer for almost any coating question is "it depends on the application."

Another thing I've learned: the address on a supplier's website matters less than whether somebody answers the phone.

When we needed advanced industrial coatings in Houston for equipment near a petrochemical facility, the stakes were high. High-heat exposure, possible chemical splash, exterior salt air—this wasn't the kind of environment where you gamble on an off-brand product. The local Axalta team brought the right system, tested the surface prep with us, and adjusted the application schedule when the humidity shifted mid-week.

I have mixed feelings about all of this, and I'm not naive. Part of me knows the big-brand support is baked into the price—Axalta wasn't the cheapest quote on that Houston job. Another part of me has seen the math on a failed coating project: labor, downtime, rework, and a client who loses trust in you. That math always favors the supplier who shows up.

Green claims need receipts—not marketing language

One more reason I trust a supplier: when they don't over-claim environmental performance.

Powder coating does emit fewer VOCs than many liquid systems—that's well established. But "zero VOC" or "completely eco-friendly"? The FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov, 16 CFR Part 260) require environmental claims to be substantiated. I'm the person who signs the purchase orders, not a chemist, so when a supplier makes a green claim, I ask for the product data sheet and any test documentation.

Axalta's reps have never made me feel foolish for asking. When they say a system is low-VOC or durable, they send the data. That's rare enough that I've started to value it higher than any sales pitch.

Is this "honest supplier" thing just a sales tactic?

Fair objection. I've met reps who say "that's not right for you" as an upsell move—steer you away from a standard product and toward a premium system.

But there's a difference between manufactured doubt and genuine technical guidance. The rep that told me to hold off on the epoxy order didn't push a pricier alternative. He said, "fix the moisture problem first, then we'll talk." That's not a tactic. That's someone who knows that a failed installation costs everyone—including his credibility.

Another objection: "Isn't this just big-brand loyalty?" Maybe. But what won me over wasn't a marketing campaign. It was a phone conversation where someone told me what I needed to hear instead of what I wanted to hear.

And a third: "Doesn't admitting a limitation make the supplier look weak?" No. It makes them look tested. Nobody knows every answer. A rep who says "this isn't the right product for your situation" is still credible when they say "but this one is." The ones who pretend otherwise are the real risk—because failure in this industry is hard to hide. You can't photoshop a delaminated floor.

What I'd tell anyone buying industrial coatings

If you're responsible for purchasing—whether it's epoxy for a concrete floor, powder coating for fabricated parts, or advanced industrial coatings for a field site—here's my advice:

Find a supplier that's willing to say "no." Not the one that says "yes" to everything. Not the one that claims one product works in every environment. The one that asks about your conditions before recommending a system, and has the technical depth and local presence to stand behind it.

That's why we buy from Axalta. Not because they're perfect, and not because they're always the cheapest. Because when I ask them "can you laser engrave powder coating?" or "will epoxy work on this concrete slab?" they give me a real answer—even when that answer is "it depends."

Honestly? That beats the alternative.
