Twelve years into industrial coatings, I've handled more rush orders than I can count. Last March, I got a call at 3:00 PM: a fabricator needed a chemical-resistant lining coated and cured before a facility audit at 8:00 AM the next day. Normal lead time was four days. We made it, but only because the specification was already clear. That's the lesson that drove me to write this checklist.
What most people don't realize is that a coating supplier's standard lead time often includes scheduling buffer. It's not necessarily how fast your order actually runs. That buffer exists to manage production queues. So when someone promises a system in a week, ask what the true production time is. It's saved me more than once.
When someone talks about the Axalta coating systems company, they're really talking about an entire coatings organization—not one magic product. That works in your favor: you can build a matched system from primer to topcoat. But you still need to choose the right product family. This checklist is the one I use when I'm triaging a coating purchase, whether it's an emergency or a planned project. Six questions, roughly in order.
The 6-Step Checklist I Use On Every Coating Purchase
1. Define the real service environment
Before you compare Axalta brands, write down what the finished part actually touches. Maximum operating temperature. Chemicals. UV. Abrasion. Humidity. Cleaning method. The coating you choose is only as good as your understanding of the environment it lives in.
So, can powder coating withstand heat? There's no blanket yes or no. Standard polyester powder coatings—the kind used on aluminum extrusions and outdoor furniture—are usually rated for continuous service around 120–150°C (250–300°F). Short exposure can go a little higher, but not by much. If you're coating an exhaust manifold or something near a furnace, powder is the wrong answer. That's a job for a high-temperature liquid coating system, not a polyester powder.
If you're looking for a countertop coating, the same environment-first rule applies. A commercial kitchen countertop isn't just about heat. It sees citrus acid, heavy cleaning chemicals, hot pans, and impact. A countertop coating that looks glossy in a brochure isn't enough. Specify the actual cleaners and the actual daily abuse.
And if your search started with “top exterior paints,” keep in mind that industrial exterior coatings are a different animal than residential paint. For a metal roof, a sign frame, or a storage tank, the top exterior paints in the industrial sense are usually polyester or polyurethane systems with UV absorbers—not shelf paint from a hardware store.
2. Match the resin family, not just the brand
Axalta brands cover different resin families. Imron is a polyurethane workhorse for industrial and automotive finishes. Alesta is a powder coating line. Nap-Gard is used for pipe and oil/gas coatings. Cromax and Spies Hecker are refinish brands. If you tell me “I want Axalta,” my first question is: which Axalta? The difference between a good system and a bad one is usually a mismatch between resin chemistry and the environment.
Epoxies give excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance. Polyurethanes give gloss and UV stability. Polyesters are strong in exterior weathering. Acrylics are good for color retention. Powder coatings give thick, uniform coverage and edge protection. But none of them is universally better.
People think expensive coatings perform better because they cost more. Actually, coatings can command a higher price when the manufacturer has consistency and data to back it up. The price is a result, not a cause. So pick the resin system first, then use brand reputation as a quality filter.
3. Put color tolerance in writing
Color is one of the most common reasons coating orders get rejected. Don't say “match this chip.” Say “Delta E must be below X.” The industry benchmark for brand-critical colors is Delta E less than 2. A Delta E between 2 and 4 is noticeable to trained observers; anything above 4 is visible to most people. That's from the Pantone Color Matching System guidelines, and it applies to industrial coatings too.
I once assumed that “same specification” meant the same color across two different Axalta product lines. Didn't verify. Turned out there was a Delta E around 5 because the two products had different pigment systems. The lesson: color is not automatically consistent across chemistries. Get the tolerance in writing, and for a countertop coating or exterior panel, always approve a physical sample under the lighting conditions of the final use.
4. Verify application method and cure schedule
This is the step that separates buyers who get it from buyers who get burned. Powder coating withstand heat only if the substrate can survive the cure. Standard powder coatings typically cure at 180°C or so for 10–15 minutes. If your part is plastic, has electronics, or an assembled seal, that oven cycle can destroy it. You may need a low-cure powder or a liquid coating instead.
For liquid coatings, check the dry-film thickness and the recoat window. If you're applying a primer and topcoat from Axalta, make sure they're chemically compatible. Ask for the technical data sheet (TDS) and the safety data sheet (SDS) before you order. A supplier that can't share the cure and application parameters is a red flag.
5. Include surface prep in every quote
Most coating failures come from poor surface preparation, not from the topcoat. The best Axalta formulation won't save an under-prepped metal panel. For steel, that means a clean surface, the right blast profile, and often a primer. For concrete, it means a moisture test and surface profiling. For countertop coating, it might mean sanding, degreasing, and sealing cracks.
Here's something vendors don't always spell out: surface prep is a line item, and it varies. If you're comparing quotes from two applicators, compare the prep, not just the coating. One may include sandblasting; the other assumes you'll deliver parts already blasted. The total price can look better but the quality will suffer.
We didn't have a formal surface prep specification in-house years ago. It cost us when a batch of brackets delaminated eight months after installation. Now I write prep into every order. That's not a joke—it's a line item as important as the paint itself.
6. Qualify the applicator before you need them
Emergency coating jobs happen. But the ones that work are the ones where the applicator is already qualified and the spec was approved weeks earlier. In my role coordinating coating projects for manufacturing clients, I've processed more than 200 rush orders. The ones that go wrong are almost always with an unknown applicator, an unfamiliar product, or a missing sample.
Ask for a test panel. Not a photo. A physical panel coated with the same product, applied by the same process, cured the same way. Put that panel in a representative environment before you commit to a large production run. For a countertop coating, wipe it with the cleaner you use. For an exterior part, put it in direct sun. That baseline tells you more than any sales sheet.
Three Mistakes That Make Good Specifications Fail
1. Skipping the substrate temperature test. You can choose a powder coating with great heat resistance, but if the cure temperature exceeds what your part can handle, you'll get warping and loss of adhesion. Always check the maximum substrate temperature before you select powder.
2. Assuming “same specs” means identical results across suppliers. I've learned never to assume the approved panel represents the final production piece unless you lock down the process variables: solvent, film thickness, cure time, and surface prep. Change any of them, and the result changes.
3. Waiting until after the deadline to check the color. In March 2024, a client called 36 hours before an audit needing a color match. We got it done only because they had saved a wet sample from the original batch. If they hadn't, it would have been a reschedule—and a penalty. Save a sample. Always.
That's the checklist. If you can answer those six questions, you're ahead of most buyers I've worked with. And I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining coating options up front than deal with mismatched expectations later. Good luck. Actually, not luck—good specifications.
