I'm not a chemist. I'm not a coatings engineer. I'm the purchasing coordinator for a 45-person woodworking and metal fabrication shop in Ohio. I manage about $180,000 in annual supplier spending, and roughly $22,000 of that goes to coatings.

Here's everything I wish someone had told me when I started handling these orders back in 2021. No sales pitch — just answers to the questions I actually had (and a few I didn't know I should be asking).

What is Axalta, exactly?

Axalta is a global coatings company — they make the stuff that goes on cars, industrial equipment, and yes, metal parts that come through shops like ours. When I first heard the name, I thought it was just another regional supplier. It's not. They operate in over 130 countries and their coatings end up on everything from automotive assembly lines to heavy machinery.

What matters for us, though, isn't the global footprint. It's the fact that their industrial coatings line holds up. We've been running Axalta powder on our metal fixtures for three years now. The color consistency is way better than what we had before. Honestly, that's the thing — when you're trying to match a client's spec exactly, a half-shade off means a rejected batch.

How do I spot a genuine Axalta product vs. a counterfeit?

This one cost me $1,400 in rework back in early 2023. I'm still annoyed about it.

We ordered what we thought was Axalta powder from a discount distributor. The Axalta logo was on the packaging — looked legit at a glance. But the batch number didn't match anything in our supplier's system, and the color was slightly off. Turned out it was a knockoff.

Here's what I check now:

  • The logo: Genuine Axalta packaging has a clean, registered trademark version of the Axalta logo. Look for crisp printing — not fuzzy or slightly-off coloring on the logo mark itself.
  • Batch traceability: Every legitimate Axalta product has a batch number you can trace to the manufacturer. If your supplier can't or won't verify it, that's a red flag.
  • Price too good: If it's 30% below what everyone else is charging, something's wrong.
  • Authorized distributor: Buy from Axalta-authorized distributors. Period. It's not worth the risk.

Bottom line: the Axalta logo on the box doesn't mean a thing if the supply chain behind it is sketchy.

What temperature cures powder coating? (And why it matters more than you think)

The short answer: most standard powder coatings cure between 350°F and 400°F (177°C to 204°C) for about 10-20 minutes, measured at the metal surface temperature — not the oven's air temperature.

That distinction matters. And I learned it the hard way.

In our first year ordering powder, I figured "350°F is 350°F" — how precise could this be? Our oven ran a bit hot in spots, and we were curing for 12 minutes. For most jobs, that was fine.

But one batch — a custom color for a client's retail fixtures — didn't fully cure. It felt dry coming out. Looked fine. Two weeks later, it started chipping off like sunburned skin. We redid 240 pieces. Cost us about $1,800 in materials, labor, and a very uncomfortable phone call.

Now I ask every supplier for the technical data sheet before we run a new powder. Cure schedules vary — some low-temp powders cure at 300°F, some high-durability formulations need 425°F. And your oven's recovery time (how fast it gets back to temp after you open the door) affects the actual cure.

"We switched to a low-cure powder from Axalta — it runs at 325°F. Our gas bill dropped by about 12% because the oven doesn't work as hard. That was an unexpected win."

Point is: don't guess. Get the spec sheet. Test your oven's actual surface temp with a thermocouple. It takes 20 minutes and saves you thousands.

Can you powder coat plywood?

No. Not with standard powder coating, anyway.

Here's the problem: powder coating requires baking at 350-400°F. Plywood starts to degrade — and the adhesives holding the layers together break down — well before that. At around 250°F, the glue in most plywood starts to soften. At 300°F, you're looking at warping, delamination, or worse.

We actually tried this once. Client wanted a powder-coated look on a plywood display stand. We figured, "How bad could it be?" The plywood bubbled and warped in under 8 minutes in the oven. That was a $600 sheet of material and half a day of fabrication wasted.

If you need a coating for plywood, you're looking at liquid coatings — things like:

  • UV-cured liquid coatings — these cure at room temperature or with UV light, no heat needed
  • Water-based acrylic coatings for indoor use
  • Solvent-based polyurethane for exterior applications
  • Melamine or phenolic coatings for industrial-grade durability

I'd suggest talking to a coatings rep who deals with wood products specifically. The requirements are totally different from metal.

What should I actually look for in a coating supplier?

I've worked with four different coatings suppliers over the past four years. Here's my checklist:

  • Technical data sheets are easy to find: If I have to email someone and wait three days for a cure schedule, that's a sign they don't have their act together.
  • They ask about your application: A good supplier will ask what substrate you're coating, what environment it'll be in, and what your oven setup looks like. If they just quote a price without any questions, that's a problem.
  • Batch consistency: Ask for a sample from your actual production batch before you commit. I've been burned by color drift between sample and production runs.
  • They answer questions after the sale: The best supplier relationship I have is with someone who still answers my emails six months after I placed the order.

Is Axalta the right choice for a small shop like ours?

Depends on what you're doing.

If you're running high-volume industrial coatings and need predictable color matching across large batches — yeah, Axalta's hard to beat. Their powder coatings are consistent and their liquid industrial lines have been solid for us.

But here's the thing — if you're a tiny shop doing one-off custom jobs, you might not need that level of consistency. You could look at local suppliers who can do smaller quantities without the premium pricing. I've gone back and forth on this myself.

What I've landed on: use Axalta for production runs where consistency matters. Use a local supplier for prototype work and one-offs. That mix has worked well for us.

The best advice I can give? Don't commit to any supplier until you've run a test batch. Any reputable supplier will support that. If they won't — that's your answer right there.
