My phone rang at 4:38 p.m. on a Thursday in March last year. I was in the back of our warehouse checking lot numbers on a shipment that was already late leaving, which is not a great time for a new problem. The caller ID said Paula. Paula doesn't call to chat.

The first thing you learn is that when someone asks for a specific chemistry in the first ninety seconds, your job is not to say yes. Your job is to find out why that name came up. In this case the reason was obvious: the factory coating was a fluoropolymer, and PTFE coatings advantages are real.
PTFE Coatings Advantages Are Real. That's Not the Same as Right for This Job
PTFE is the reason that conveyor ran cleanly when it was new. Coatings made with polytetrafluoroethylene offer low friction, excellent non-stick release, chemical resistance, and a surface that washes down quickly. When a product jam is caused by a worn release layer, PTFE is the first name that comes to mind. Honestly, I get it. The PTFE-first thinking comes from an era when practical alternatives for low-friction food plant coatings were scarce. That has changed.
What usually gets left out of the conversation is the cure. A true PTFE coating system has to be heated to roughly 360 to 400 degrees Celsius during application so the film sinters into a continuous, non-porous layer. That is a factory process. The part has to go into an oven designed for it.
Paula's conveyor was welded into place, wrapped around drives and sensors, with pneumatic lines inches away. We were not going to cure a PTFE topcoat on it in the field. Taking the conveyor out and sending it to a coating shop was a ten-day proposition at best. We had about 36 hours.
So I asked Paula a question that sounds like wordplay but isn't: 'Do you need PTFE, or do you need the line running by Saturday?' She paused. 'I need the line running.' Good. That is a much better specification.
I'm not a food-safety engineer, so I don't make compliance calls from memory. What I can do from my role is pull product data, compare cure schedules, and get the manufacturer's technical people on the phone with the plant's compliance team. We did that. Their coating spray machine sat in the maintenance bay, a plural-component unit on a cart, the kind that pumps two materials and mixes them at the gun. This applies to coatings too. When someone calls looking for an additive-free coating, that phrase alone is not a useful technical requirement. Coating additives are how you get leveling, adhesion, corrosion resistance, and color. The useful questions are: what is in this system, what could migrate from the coating into the product, and what level is considered safe for that application? Those are documentation questions, not marketing questions.
What I'd Do Differently Next Time
Looking back, I should have asked for photos of the conveyor and its operating temperatures in the first phone call. I got so caught up in the product name that I almost made it a chemistry conversation instead of a systems conversation. A few photos would have shown the geometry, the sensors, the pneumatic lines, and exactly why a factory-cure coating was impossible without a single argument.
If I could redo that decision, I would also make ratio checks standard before any rush application on a customer's coating spray machine, not just when a stubborn applicator insists. Rick had to push back against my timeline to catch the problem. That is backwards. The timeline should include the check from the start.
Even after the final coat went on and the cure started, I kept second-guessing. What if the stainless steel had hidden contamination and the adhesion didn't hold? What if a fitting leaked solvent into the coated zone? The hours between Friday night and Saturday morning's first trial run were not restful. I didn't relax until Paula's text came through on Monday with a photo of the line running normally.
The line made the truck. The coating is still doing its job, and the plant now has documented lead time to plan a permanent repair. That is what rush work is really about: not performing miracles, but removing the wrong options early enough that the right option has time to work.
Bottom line: PTFE coatings advantages are real, but they are not universal. Additive-free is a claim, not a spec. And a coating spray machine that has not been calibrated is not a machine; it is a guess. In an emergency, the most expensive thing you can do is assume the old answer fits the new problem. Ask what problem you are actually solving, check everything that affects the answer, and make somebody put the claims in writing.
