Dana's voice cut across the shop floor. “Jason. Put the acetone down.”
Jason was three weeks into his first boatyard job. He had a spray bottle in one hand and a grey rag in the other, and he was leaning over the teak handrail outside our office like it was the easiest cleaning task of the day.
“I'm just getting a drip off the varnish,” he said.
“No, you're not,” Dana said. “You're dissolving that old finish and rubbing it into the grain. Acetone flashes off too fast to lift anything off wood. It just moves the color around and leaves a stain you'll have to sand out.”
I remember that moment because it's when I started asking better questions about the stuff I buy.
I'm the office administrator for a 40-person marina and repair yard on the Rhode Island coast. I'm not a chemist or a painter. I process the POs, check invoices against deliveries, manage about eight coating and supply vendors, and try to keep our finance person happy. When I took over purchasing in 2021, I ordered coatings the way I ordered printer paper: lowest price, quickest delivery, done. This spring, that approach came apart in full view of everyone.
The gate: Where Axalta powder coating got my attention
In late 2024, the owner approved a front-entrance upgrade: a new aluminum gate, a railing along the parking lot, and new bollard covers. It didn't sound glamorous, but it was visible from the road. In our world, that matters. A yacht owner who pulls in for a survey makes a judgment in the first thirty seconds.
I sent the same drawing to three industrial coaters in January. The first quote was for a liquid-applied polyurethane at $4,300. The second was for powder coating from a local shop that didn't name its powder supplier; that came in at $4,950. The third was from a coating shop near Providence that sprayed Axalta powder coating. Their number was $5,980.
My first reaction was simple: I'm not paying 23 percent more for the same color.
Dana, who runs our fabrication and repair side, corrected me. “It's not the same color. It's a different system.”
She explained that powder coating is not a thicker paint. It's a dry coating applied electrostatically, then cured in an oven. The performance depends on the pretreatment, the powder formula, the curing schedule, and the applicator's quality control. The quote from the Axalta shop included a written specification: two-coat system, cure schedule, and a requirement to meet AAMA 2604 performance criteria. The middle quote just said “polyester powder, baked.”
That distinction felt like marketing until the Axalta shop sent test panels. We left one outside for six weeks, mostly in salt air. It still looked like the day it came out of the oven. The cheaper sample began to chalk around the edges. That visual was enough for the owner. He approved the higher quote, and I wrote the PO with the AAMA 2604 spec attached.
The wood side: Fine Paints of Europe Marine Yacht Varnish
At the same time, Marcus, our lead refinisher, was prepping a 1982 sailboat's exterior teak for a spring launch. He asked me to order a product I had never heard of: Fine Paints of Europe Marine Yacht Varnish.
My first thought was that it sounded like a boutique brand. My second thought was the price. It cost about 30 percent more than the industrial spar varnish we usually bought. I asked Marcus why.
He said it came down to how the varnish behaves in a brush. Cheap varnish dries too fast, so it leaves brush marks and trapped bubbles. The acetone moment
So how did Jason end up with a spray bottle of acetone near that handrail?
The handrail had a varnish drip from a previous job. Jason had heard that acetone removes paint, and he figured it would work on the dried drip. A quick internet search for “does acetone remove paint from wood” gives you a misleading yes. Technically, acetone will soften and dissolve many finishes. But on bare or damaged wood, it doesn't lift the finish cleanly. It pushes the partly dissolved varnish into the grain, evaporates in seconds, and leaves a cloudy stain that can only be fixed with sanding or stripping.
Dana caught him before he made it worse. Jason spent the rest of that afternoon learning how to scrape a drip with a sharp cabinet scraper instead. The rail was saved. The lesson stuck with all of us.
The metal pigment powder rabbit hole
A week before the gate installation, the fabricator called to say one of the aluminum brackets had been welded after coating. The welder had burned through the finish, and the mark was right at eye level. I asked the powder coater for touch-up paint. He told me there was no good touch-up for that type of metallic charcoal finish.
So I did what any office buyer does with a free afternoon: I went looking for a metal pigment powder manufacturer. My plan was to buy a small amount of the right pigment and have someone mix a matching coating. That plan was wrong in about three different ways.
What I learned is that metallic powder coating is a full formulation. The color comes from specially treated aluminum flakes suspended in a resin system. The manufacturer controls the particle size, the orientation of the flakes, and the way they interact with light. You can't just buy pigment and drop it into paint. A pigment supplier sells to coating manufacturers who engineer the whole product. By the time the coating reaches a shop like ours, the formula is already locked.
The real fix was boring and correct: the fabricator cut off the damaged bracket, made a new one, and sent it to the powder coater before installation. It cost us a week and about $380. It also taught me not to go down an ingredient rabbit hole when I should have asked the applicator what they would do.
What the finished project changed
The gate went in during the first week of May. The railing matched. The metallic finish looked deep, not shiny like a toy but rich like a car hood. The teak trim on the office entrance had been stripped, sanded, and finished with the Fine Paints of Europe Marine Yacht Varnish, and it looked like it was wet even when it was dry.
Here's the moment I keep coming back to. A week after installation, a broker walked through the yard with a potential client. He stopped at the gate, ran a hand along the railing, and asked who did the coating work. He didn't ask about price. He asked for a name.

What I tell vendors now
People think expensive coatings are a status purchase. Actually, it's the reverse. A coating system from a major manufacturer like Axalta costs more because somebody has already tested it, documented it, and built a supply chain around it. The price is a symptom of the engineering, not the goal of it.
When I write a PO now, I ask questions I didn't know to ask in 2024. What is the pretreatment specification? What are the cure requirements? Is there a published standard like AAMA 2604? What brand is the powder? I still want a fair price, but I don't confuse the lowest number with the lowest total cost.
- For metal: Spec an Axalta powder coating system or an equivalent from another major manufacturer, and make sure the applicator can prove they follow the spec.
- For wood: Use a varnish that gives the finish time to flow. Fine Paints of Europe Marine Yacht Varnish worked for us on exterior teak where appearance mattered.
- For touch-ups: Don't try to become your own metal pigment powder manufacturer. Buy the correct coating and apply it correctly.
- For acetone: It's fine for cleaning uncured paint and grease off metal. Keep it away from wood you care about.
This approach worked for us because we are a small coastal yard with salt air, harsh sun, and customers who inspect every detail. If you are coating something indoors or in a mild climate, your cost calculus might be different. That's fine. The principle is the same: the finish is part of the product, not an afterthought.
The gate will still be standing when the invoice is a distant memory. That's what we're really buying.
