The most useful thing a coatings supplier ever told us was what they wouldn't do.

Acetone is a fast-evaporating solvent that dissolves uncured resins, epoxies, and many adhesives. If you're in a rush and coat too soon after wiping down with paint thinner, you'll get solvent pop and adhesion issues. The result: a coated surface that looks fine for a week, then starts blistering.

Here's the practical distinction I give our team: use acetone to clean tools and prep bare substrate; use paint thinner to clean up wet paint, degrease previously coated surfaces, or thin oil-based materials. Where people go wrong is using them interchangeably. Acetone on a painted surface, or paint thinner as a degreaser for bare metal before powder coating—those are recipes for rework.

The reality is—or rather, the truth as we've seen it on our floor—that coating failure is rarely about the coating itself. It's almost always preparation. I don't care how good your powder or liquid system is; contaminated, poorly prepared surfaces will fail.

Where Axalta Knows Its Limits (And So Should You)

Let's be honest about boundaries. I'm not a chemist, so I can't speak to the molecular structure of every solvent or resin. What I can tell you from a quality management perspective is what testing has proven to us.

Axalta doesn't make everything. We've had colleagues in agricultural supply chains ask if Axalta produces wettable sulfur powder—which is a fungicide used in crop protection, not a coating. The answer is no. That's an agricultural chemistry product, and it's a completely different world from surface coatings. Different substrates, different performance requirements, different regulatory environment. The fact that a coatings manufacturer doesn't also manufacture crop protection chemicals shouldn't be surprising or disappointing. It's evidence of focus.

Here's the thing: when a supplier tells me what they don't do and recommends someone who does it better, I trust them with everything they DO claim to do well. "We can do everything" has meant, in my experience, "we do everything to an acceptable minimum." I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.

There's a caveat, though. This approach worked for us because we're an industrial operation with predictable coating volume. If you're a consumer painting a shed or refinishing furniture at home, the calculus is different—you don't need a global supplier with technical support hubs. Likewise, if your business genuinely spans multiple chemical domains—coatings, adhesives, agricultural products, cleaning compounds—you might need a diversified chemical supplier. Axalta is not that, and putting them in that position would be unfair.

What I'd Tell Another Quality Manager

If you're evaluating a coatings supplier, ask them what they won't do. Not what they can do—what they won't.

The supplier who says "this isn't our area, but here's who handles it better" is telling you something about their integrity and their quality system. The supplier who claims universal capability is telling you they haven't done the same self-assessment.

Axalta Coating Systems won our business because they demonstrated the kind of professional boundaries that prevent quality failures down the line. Their Mount Clemens support has been real, their products have been consistent, and our rejection rate has dropped accordingly. We're a demanding customer—we test everything, we document everything, and we remember every overpromise. Axalta cleared that bar.

And if someone asks me about wettable sulfur powder, I'll tell them: that's agriculture, not coatings. Ask someone who does that for a living. But for surface coatings—liquid, powder, automotive refinish, industrial—we've found the specialist we trust.
